The Tuscaloosan Thrasher versus The Gypsy King, this is going to be a very interesting fight. The biggest factor in this fight is going to be the confidence of Wilder, maybe better put, the over confidence of the Tuscaloosan Tormentor. When Fury fought Klitschko, Vlad thought it was going to be an easy fight and went in there with confidence, too much confidence, and the Gypsy King taught a lesson in over estimation, Vlad’s, and why you should prepare like you are the underdog. In this fight, the more nervous one might come out triumphant. This is not an easy fight for the Tuscaloosan Tornado, you get it because of the way he swings when he gets you hurt, by any means and if he thinks he is guaranteed a victory because he is the one with the power, he could be looking at relinquishing that title. The Gypsy King’s biggest attribute is his doughy body, reminds me of Tony Tubbs, unassuming and doesn’t scream out top tier, but he is. Fury has skills that are underestimated until you get into the ring with him and you find out that he is not that easy to hit. The biggest advantage for Wilder is that he does carry that power but unless he sets up the the Furious One he isn’t going to land it unless he gets lucky. If the Tuscaloosan Terminator walks in without a game plan on how to lead the Fab Fury into that right hand, he’s going to be eating jabs all night long and lose on a decision or a late KO. Wilder has to pump that jab like it gives him $1,000 every time he throws it and watch for Fury’s reaction so he can time that Tuscaloosan Torpedo and land. For Fury, be your awkward self and never move the same way twice in a row. Keep Wilder guessing and by all that’s good and living, move to your right as much as possible or you might not be…….. good and living.

My prediction for this fight, it’s going to be electric. I say Wilder by KO in the middle rounds, just because he has been more active and fought the better opposition lately. Good luck to both combatants.

What can be said about the Mets that that everyone already doesn’t know? They’re the best team in baseball to finish in 4th place and under .500 for the year. They’re also the most injury plagued team in baseball. The infamous injury curse has them bewildered. Is their field built over high powered magnetic power lines or is their water contaminated or are they up late playing xbox? Who knows why this team gets hurt so much. Conforto swings a bat and dislocates a shoulder, Thor throws a ball and rips a lat, Wright dives on the field and gets up with all kids of stenosis and back problems, d’Arnaud sneezes and almost loses a finger, Cespedes drives into Queens and pulls a hamstring, TJ Rivera blows out his elbow catching a ball. While some of those are meant to be funny, there isn’t anything funny about a team that could easily contend but because some voodoo doctor put a hex on them they’re home watching the post season. I’m looking at you Yankees. If the Mets could stay healthy, they have all the components to win right now. With the addition of Nimmo, McNeil, Rosario, Guillorme (struck out only 3 times and walked 7 times in 67 at bats, that’s 21 SO’s and 49 BB’s in 469 at bats, some are bound to find the holes, he can hit and has a really good eye) and if Rivera can get healthy, this team is easily a winning team and look a lot like the Cubs, minus the power but plus the amazing pitching, of 2016 or the Mets of 2015, not the Mets of 1986 unless they put bourbon in their gatorade. To trade any major component of this team right now for someone that is in his twilight part of his career would be an amazing blunder. Thor is a Cy Young winner uncrowned but will soon be. Degrom is the best pitcher in baseball. Wheeler could easily be at the level of his cohorts if he pitches like he did the last ten games of the season going 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA, maybe we can sweep the Cy Young the next three years in a row. We have hitters, we definitely have pitchers, all we need is a closer and a better witch doctor then the Yankees. Rehydrate, take a tylenol before each game, and buy bottled water, add sauna to the locker room and a cryo machine and we win it all, oh yeah, send me season tickets, almost forgot the most important part, you may want to ban cell phones, that may help.

 

Just watched the replay of GGG v Canelo and all I can say is god damn, what a fight! GGG looked like he got a bit older but fought beautifully and Canelo is figuratively made of cast iron. After watching the replay, there is one thing that is not in doubt, GGG won, at least 8 rounds, no one can deny that after re-watching the fight. The bettng odds were -160 Golovkin to +130 Canelo. So if you bet $1000 on Canelo then you just walked away with $2300. That’s a hell of a payday.

GGG landed the big shot in round 10 that had Canelo holding on and noticeably zapped his strength. I had GGG winning rounds 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 – without a doubt. Canelo had all the other rounds, some in doubt.

I think when a fight of this magnitude is this close and doesn’t end up in a knockout, the commission should call the decision as a provisional decision until a review can be had the next day by 6 judges. Then you hand down the official decision.

I’ve seen some outraged analysts over this rematch take to the airwaves and voice their displeasure and I thought that they were overreacting but it seems that they were right.

I won’t pay for number 3 but I think that it is definitely warranted, plus, I would like to see Canelo win one.

Dear Fight Fans,

On the night of Saturday, September 15, fans were set to be treated to what sports should be all about: the two best athletes in a sport squaring off against each other with the winner earning the title of the best in the business. This kind of an event – where an individual can be called the best in any sport — is truly rare.

Not only did the fight itself deliver all that was promised, against all kinds of pressure, Canelo Alvarez gave the performance of his lifetime to secure the unified middleweight championship of the world.

• Unfairly criticized for not fighting “Mexican” enough in the first fight, he kept Gennady Golovkin on his heals all night, taking the action to the “boogeyman of boxing,” walking him down and controlling the pace.
• Repeatedly ravaged for two positive drug tests that showed minor traces of clenbuterol – a common occurrence in Mexico due to the contamination of beef across the country, Canelo submitted to more than 20 drug tests in the lead up to the fight and passed them all with flying colors.
• Saddled with a judge’s card of a year ago that he had nothing to do with; the pressure of millions of fans watching; and what many were describing as a must-win to stay relevant, Canelo delivered a near-flawless fight.

And yet…

It wouldn’t be boxing if thousands of keyboard warriors weren’t talking (or tweeting) complete nonsense in the hours and days after Canelo began to cement his legacy as an all-time great fighter.

Many have told me to ignore the haters; that I’ll never win. But while I know I won’t convince many of them, allowing them to even partly soil what was a certain fight of the year; a megaevent seen by millions of people; and a virtuoso performance by boxing’s marquis fighter would do a disservice to the sport I love.

So allow me to respond to a few of the more absurd comments.

Golden Boy paid the judges to fix the fight.

Though I don’t think this deserves response, here are the facts: The three judges were chosen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Given the result of the first fight, NSAC was under a lot of scrutiny to come up with the fairest group of judges possible. For the first time I know of, GBP and team GGG were even allowed to approve a pool of judges. They saw what everyone else did; a close, competitive fight and scored it exactly that way.

Golovkin landed more punches and therefore should have won the fight.

If landed punches were the difference between winning or losing a boxing match, we would have an incredibly different and less interesting sport. Clean punching, ring generalship, effective aggressiveness and defense are what the judges are looking for in determining the winner of a round. I’m obviously a promoter, but in the four areas that actually count in judging, I can’t find one where GGG was the victor.

Tom Loeffler’s statement that he doesn’t know if Golvokin can win a decision in Las Vegas.

Perhaps Tom is just looking to make GGG feel better, but regardless this is maybe the most disappointing comment, because it comes from someone who knows the sport. Of course, GGG can win a decision in Vegas. But 22,000 people aren’t going to crowd into the T-Mobile to watch Golovkin fight and blast out the likes of Dominic Wade, Willie Monroe, Jr., or Vanes Martirosyan. He is going to need to fight a higher level of competition – and then fight better than that opponent – to earn a victory in the mecca of boxing.

Boxing is a wonderful sport that is coming back thanks to streaming technology and growing international interest. But it is a sport that also faces competition, not only from the outside in the form of other, more-widely watched leagues, but from inside where the fractured nature of boxing has made it tougher and tougher for the best to face the best.

Just look at celebrity row to see how special Saturday night was. There, another best-in-sport athlete, Lebron James, joined Will Smith, Mark Wahlberg and a huge group of other A-list celebrities to witness something special.

While everyone is entitled to his or her opinion (especially in boxing), let’s take a moment to appreciate what Canelo and GGG gave us on Saturday night and work towards doing it more often for the sake of the sport we all love so much.

De La Hoya is correct. I think the letter represents a well thought out and to the point redress of criticism of Canelo and the fight in it’s entirety. He is Canelo’s promoter and has done well in protecting his protege from silly criticisms. He also makes a good point about how fights are scored but I will remind him of his criticism of both the Trinidad and Mosely fights where he was the person that was robbed and he was robbed. While we all admit that the fight on Saturday, 15th of September 2018, was very close, there is no way you can call it a robbery. That doesn’t mean that we can’t think that Golovkin won, I’m sure he understands that and is only addressing the people that are making ludicrous and absurd claims.

Ok, I wasn’t going to buy this fight. My thoughts were simple, “I’m not going to buy this fight”, but then I reasoned that I didn’t get myself a birthday gift this year yet and my birthday just passed, so, I bought the fight. Was it worth it, ehhhhh, no, but I reasoned again that if I had attended the fight it would have cost a crap load more plus birthday gifts are all about splurging on yourself. Now, I’m not saying that the fights weren’t good, they were, for the most part. You had everything in this PPV set-up. The flashy left hook one punch damn that looked like it hurt knockout of O’Sullivan by Lemieux, who can no longer use the moniker “Spike” as it now belongs to Lemieux. He can use Fido or Rover, maybe lassie since he’s Irish, but not Spike. No one named Spike goes down like that in the first round on a single punch. You had the track meet, more like a sprint since it ended in three, with Munguia hitting everything and anything that dares enter the ring between the bell sounds (opening and ending). If you watch the fight, you see the ref gets hit as well and I don’t believe it was by accident. Munguia reminds me of that movie, A Quiet Place, as I think he might have vision problems and hits what he hears. Cook wasn’t trying to hit Munguia, he was taking money from his socks, that he put there, and was trying to give it to Munguia so Munguia would stop beating the swoop off of his his now politically correct Nike shorts. Then you had  Chocolatito, Roman Gonzalez, fighting against his dad, or what seemed like his dad as the 5’3″ Gonzalez dispatched his 5’6″ opponent with a right hand that sent him into dream land, where, I’m sure, he dreamt, which is an appropriate past participle tense of dream, that he won.

Then, the big drama show, GGG v Canelo. I don’t know what happened but it seemed like there was a role reversal of sorts as Canelo barely took a step backwards and Triple G was using the stick and moving backwards. My first thought right away was, this is bad for Gennady. If he doesn’t back up Canelo, his mystique and his prowess seems defeated. This, not the fight itself, is what lost him the fight. Canelo’s team and Canelo should be congratulated, for pulling it off, the greatest illusion in boxing this year. Let me explain, when you have a boxer that decimates everything that is in front of him and he is now backing up, he must not be effective, at least that’s the mind set, think Rocky III or II or any of the freaking Rocky films. That is the common thought amongst lay boxing spectators, not that he fought the same way Canelo did in the last fight and was more effective than Canelo but that the guy that KO’s tanks isn’t denting Canelo. GGG landed the heavier blows, hurt his opponent, made Canelo hold or he would have suffered a knock down but didn’t live up to his word as making it a center of the ring slugfest. Canelo, for his part, did something that no one ever did to GGG, he walked him down, Canelo manned up and came forward almost all night. Who did I think won, hahaha, would you believe that I had it a draw? I think GGG eked it out because I’m old school and believe that you must actually take the belt from the champion and while Canelo came for the belt, straight ahead all night, he got rocked, noticeably, and Canelo couldn’t do that to GGG. That, right there, was the difference for me, but since fights are scored by round and not by who was hurt the worst, I still think GGG might have eked it out and so do most of the online publications. Personally, you can kind of tell that GGG lost a step and he might want to fight a couple of more times but I think that he should start planning for life after boxing as, you can tell, the time is coming. But Congratulations to the Canelo team and Golden Boy productions, they had the better game plan and pulled it off.

I will say one more thing, I did buy this PPV event because of the under card and the seemingly good match ups but I promise these promoters that I will never buy another one of their events unless their is at least one female event. This is the last time I ever buy an event without the diversification of having at least one female bout. Come on guys, we’re in 2018, you could have shared the wealth with a Braekhus, Shields, Taylor, Hardy, Juarez or a Hammer. You should be willing to expand the sport to get better viewership, plus I find their fights somewhat exciting due to the 2 minute rounds.
