Intelligence is independent of socioeconomic status, race, and gender. Albert Einstein. Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Mozart—the world’s greatest minds have come from all walks of life.

HealthyWay

But studies have shown that intelligent people do share certain personality traits. If you’ve always thought you were smarter than the average bear, you might find yourself identifying with some of these 10 characteristics.

1. Intelligent people stay up late.

Do you stay up all night or rise and shine with the sun? Some studies show that more intelligent children grow up to be nocturnal as adults.

HealthyWay

There’s a neat bit of science behind this theory. Almost every living organism is governed by circadian rhythm, the internal clock that sets sleep/wake cycles. Humans, however, can actually alter their individual clock, which is why some people stay up late and others rise early.

Until fairly recently, humans tended to sleep as soon as the sun set and rise again with the light. The theory is that more intelligent individuals evolved to actually manipulate their sleep cycles, thus adapting more successfully to modern life.

*(Manny’s Personal thoughts – I’m wary about this one as it gives teenagers excuses to party ’til they drop and then say it made them smarter)

2. Birth order has an impact on intelligence.

Are you the oldest sibling in your family? If so, you might just be the smartest one too. Older siblings may be more intelligent because they receive more mental stimulation during critical stages of development.

HealthyWay

If you weren’t lucky enough to be born first in your family, though, don’t despair. Research also shows that while older siblings may be more intelligent, younger siblings are actually more likely to be successful in life.

*Manny’s (middle child) Personal thought – This puts the middle child in a conundrum, as the youngest will be successful and oldest more intelligent, here’s crossing my fingers for the middle child hitting the lottery

3. Cat people are smarter.

Dogs may be man’s most loyal companions, but research claims that cat lovers may be more intelligent.

HealthyWay

Carroll University conducted a study that measured personality traits, including intelligence among self-described cat lovers and dog lovers. The study found that dog lovers’ social skills are more advanced, but cat lovers scored higher on intelligence markers.

Owning a cat is probably not the sole reason for increased intelligence but a hallmark of your underlying personality. Dog owners tend to be extroverted and seek companionship.

HealthyWay

Cat owners, on the other hand, are usually more introverted, which gives them ample time to focus on reading, thinking, and accumulating information.

*Manny’s Personal opnion – the author owns a cat and got bit by a dog. (maybe) Go dog power.

4. People with a high IQ are messy and disorganized.

Mom always told you to clean your room, but if your space looks like a Category 4 hurricane just swept through, it may be indicative of high IQ. According to a study from the University of Minnesota, a messy space spurs creative thought.

HealthyWay

In the study, participants who were placed in a tidy space made traditionally “good” choices, like choosing an apple over chocolate.

But when asked to come up with new uses for ping pong balls, the messy-room participants overwhelming came up with creative and novel ideas.

HealthyWay

The study suggests that tidy people make safer choices, but notoriously messy people (like Albert Einstein, for instance) tend to have creative thoughts that lead to innovation.

*Manny’s personal opinion – Thank god, I thought I was just lazy, it turns out I was just too damn smart to clean up

5. Breast-fed babies grow up to be more intelligent adults.

Breast milk is the original superfood. In the first months of life, it contains all the key nutrients babies need to thrive. However, synthetic formula also contains many nutrients and is a great alternative to breast milk. So what makes breast-fed babies smarter?

HealthyWay

According to Betty Vohr, a professor at Brown University, “The benefit is likely due to long-chain fatty acids found in breast milk.” Long-chain fatty acids, like DHA, aid infants in association and memory development, which may help them develop a higher IQ.

If you bottle feed, there’s no need to worry. Just make sure your formula includes DHA, and your little one will probably be at the top of their class in a few years.

*Manny’s Personal opinion – Don’t know if I was breast fed, but I sure tried later on in life

6. More intelligent people engage in one-sided conversation.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes often carries on a conversation with himself, talking almost as fast as he solves cases. Sherlock, a brilliant (but fictional) detective, may be onto something. Studies show that talking to yourself could be a sign of advanced intelligence.

HealthyWay

Problem-solving out loud can help organize thoughts and actions. In addition, talking to yourself can help you focus and complete specific tasks faster. So the next time you get shushed in the library for muttering to yourself, let the librarian know you’re just trying to improve your brainpower!

  • Manny’s Personal Opinion – And society was locking these people up in mental hospitals, no wonder shit is fucked up, all the intelligent people are in rubber rooms

7. Curiosity leads to higher intelligence.

There are three markers that determine a person’s ability to mentally manage complexity.

HealthyWay

Intelligence quotient (IQ) is traditionally thought of as the most important indicator of intelligence and is difficult to improve significantly as you age.

The other two indicators, emotional quotient (EQ) and curiosity quotient (CQ), however, can be improved over time and may play a much larger role in the ability to improve cognitive function.

HealthyWay

In particular, individuals with a higher CQ are more accepting of the unknown, preferring to ask questions and form their own hypotheses. Individuals who cultivate a higher CQ tend to have a higher intellectual investment over time, leading to increased intelligence.

*Manny’s Personal Opinion – That’s odd that curiosity marks intelligence because it killed the cat that “supposedly” smart people have and the dog survived, who’s the smart pet owner now

8. Playing an instrument makes you smarter.

Now might be the time to call up your kindergarten teacher and thank them for making you learn “Hot Cross Buns” on the recorder.

HealthyWay

Studies show that children who play an instrument “develop ‘neurophysiological distinction’ between certain sounds that can aid in literacy, which can translate into improved academic results for kids.”

Some scientists disagree, instead positing that children who take music lessons “tend to have better-educated, higher-earning parents, and to do more extra-curricular activities than other children their age.”

HealthyWay

Whether or not playing an instrument actually improves brain function, all scientists can agree that encouraging children to participate in arts programs is never a bad thing. Kids who interact with the arts tend to have a broader worldview, which also increases intelligence.

*Manny’s Personal Opinion -I play spotify all the time

9. A sense of humor indicates intelligence.

If you’ve ever seen the classic comedy Dumb and Dumber, you might disagree with the theory that a sense of humor indicates above-average intelligence. In one study, students were asked to come up with captions for New Yorker cartoons. The captions that students found funniest were overwhelmingly written by those who performed higher on IQ tests.

HealthyWay

People who are considered to have a high IQ don’t find just anything humorous, however. According to Reader’s Digest, people who appreciate dark jokes are more intelligent. One reason for this is that it takes a greater mental capacity to process a dark or complicated joke as opposed to the simplicity of a knock-knock joke.

*Manny’s Personal Opinion – Well, I guess you have to read my other personal opinions and make an intelligent decision, by the way, if you don’t get it, they were too dark for you

10. Intelligent people are more humble.

Everyone knows one person at work who brags about being the best when their performance is really mediocre on a good day.

HealthyWay

The Dunning-Kruger Effect explains how this happens.

Basically, the Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias whereby incompetent people (like that coworker) can’t recognize their own incompetence, and what’s more, they tend to believe the opposite about themselves.

*Manny’s Personal Opinion – I just don’t know what to say here, they could be right

HealthyWay

On the flip side, people who are highly skilled and considered to be more intelligent rarely brag about their accomplishments and are more likely to doubt their abilities.

GGG v CANELO 2

canelo ggg 2

Ok, I wasn’t going to buy this fight. My thoughts were simple, “I’m not going to buy this fight”, but then I reasoned that I didn’t get myself a birthday gift this year yet and my birthday just passed, so, I bought the fight. Was it worth it, ehhhhh, no, but I reasoned again that if I had attended the fight it would have cost a crap load more plus birthday gifts are all about splurging on yourself. Now, I’m not saying that the fights weren’t good, they were, for the most part. You had everything in this PPV set-up. The flashy left hook one punch damn that looked like it hurt knockout of O’Sullivan by Lemieux, who can no longer use the moniker “Spike” as it now belongs to Lemieux. He can use Fido or Rover, maybe lassie since he’s Irish, but not Spike. No one named Spike goes down like that in the first round on a single punch. You had the track meet, more like a sprint since it ended in three, with Munguia hitting everything and anything that dares enter the ring between the bell sounds (opening and ending). If you watch the fight, you see the ref gets hit as well and I don’t believe it was by accident. Munguia reminds me of that movie, A Quiet Place, as I think he might have vision problems and hits what he hears. Cook wasn’t trying to hit Munguia, he was taking money from his socks, that he put there, and was trying to give it to Munguia so Munguia would stop beating the swoop off of his his now politically correct Nike shorts. Then you had  Chocolatito, Roman Gonzalez, fighting against his dad, or what seemed like his dad as the 5’3″ Gonzalez dispatched his 5’6″ opponent with a right hand that sent him into dream land, where, I’m sure, he dreamt, which is an appropriate past participle tense of dream, that he won.

Then, the big drama show, GGG v Canelo. I don’t know what happened but it seemed like there was a role reversal of sorts as Canelo barely took a step backwards and Triple G was using the stick and moving backwards. My first thought right away was, this is bad for Gennady. If he doesn’t back up Canelo, his mystique and his prowess seems defeated. This, not the fight itself, is what lost him the fight. Canelo’s team and Canelo should be congratulated, for pulling it off, the greatest illusion in boxing this year. Let me explain, when you have a boxer that decimates everything that is in front of him and he is now backing up, he must not be effective, at least that’s the mind set, think Rocky III or II or any of the freaking Rocky films. That is the common thought amongst lay boxing spectators, not that he fought the same way Canelo did in the last fight and was more effective than Canelo but that the guy that KO’s tanks isn’t denting Canelo. GGG landed the heavier blows, hurt his opponent, made Canelo hold or he would have suffered a knock down but didn’t live up to his word as making it a center of the ring slugfest. Canelo, for his part, did something that no one ever did to GGG, he walked him down, Canelo manned up and came forward almost all night. Who did I think won, hahaha, would you believe that I had it a draw? I think GGG eked it out because I’m old school and believe that you must actually take the belt from the champion and while Canelo came for the belt, straight ahead all night, he got rocked, noticeably, and Canelo couldn’t do that to GGG. That, right there, was the difference for me, but since fights are scored by round and not by who was hurt the worst, I still think GGG might have eked it out and so do most of the online publications. Personally, you can kind of tell that GGG lost a step and he might want to fight a couple of more times but I think that he should start planning for life after boxing as, you can tell, the time is coming. But Congratulations to the Canelo team and Golden Boy productions, they had the better game plan and pulled it off.

I will say one more thing, I did buy this PPV event because of the under card and the seemingly good match ups but I promise these promoters that I will never buy another one of their events unless their is at least one female event. This is the last time I ever buy an event without the diversification of having at least one female bout. Come on guys, we’re in 2018, you could have shared the wealth with a Braekhus, Shields, Taylor, Hardy, Juarez or a Hammer. You should be willing to expand the sport to get better viewership, plus I find their fights somewhat exciting due to the 2 minute rounds.

I was in court and this guy is seated next to me in handcuffs. The guy asks me what I did and I said that I accidentally ran over a pet that ran out into the street. He said man, that’s awful, then asked me if I was ashamed, I asked him what he was here for and he said that he was convicted of rape, child molesting and murder. I then said, am I ashamed in front of you, No.

You can’t feel the heat from a match next to a towering inferno.

I THANK GOD FOR BOXING

boxing gloves

I would like to share a story of why everyone should do boxing.

I have trained in boxing, on and off, for the past thirty odd years. Have never been good enough to really do anything with it financially speaking, but it has kept me in good shape. When I severely sprained my ankle while working in the border Patrol, I stood on one leg and and a leg with an air cast and used boxing drills to keep me in shape. As soon as I was cleared to run again, something that I used to love to do, I was able to run down a group of illegal citizens that had crossed. Chasing them down for a little less than a mile, carrying all my equipment , the day after I was cleared to return to work. Boxing is an amazing sport that fine tunes your body. What it does mostly, it refines your reflexes. It makes them quicker and steady.

This was never more apparent when my son, at the age of 8, for some reason decided to cross the street running while an SUV had just accelerated at full speed to beat a light. I had just turned my head to the right to look for oncoming traffic when I caught my son, who was to my left, through the corner of my eye, racing into the middle of the street. Out of nowhere, my left hand, my best hand, I used to throw a mean and quick left hook, even though I’m righty, reached out and grabbed him and pulled him back. The SUV was literally, not figuratively, right upon him. I pulled him back and out of the way. All I can think is that if my son gotten hit that day, I would have never been able to live with myself. It would have devastated me. My son apologized and he knew better. I have been teaching him to the cross the street since he was 5. I don’t know what got into his head.

I thank boxing, it literally saved my son’s life.

PORTER v GARCIA

porter v garcia

Let us start by saying that if the fight on the 15th has half the action this fight had then it will live up to the hype. This is going to be considered a candidate for fight of the year. It was a see saw battle for the first half of the fight but it was Porter’s ability and tenacity that pulled it out in the end. This fight is also an in-depth look at how judges score fights. Porter was overwhelming, as he usually is in all his fights and he was quick footed, quicker then Garcia, and had his in and out game down. You can tell it frustrated Garcia a little. Garcia, showed some amazing timing and had the cleaner harder shots as he visibly wobbled Porter at least once but he could not follow up. The difference in the end was Porter’s stamina for which Garcia tried to diminish by landing some thudding blows to the body, which you can tell bothered Porter because he tried to return the favor, When you hurt someone to the body, their instinct is to go to the other person’s body, which Porter did with effectiveness. Porter was the physically stronger fighter while Garcia seemed to be the stronger puncher and had more eye catching shots. In the end, according to compustats, never a super reliable way to actually record landed punches but has some viability, showed that Garcia landed more power shots but threw way less. Porter overwhelmed Garcia with punches in bunches, landing some very good shots of his own, but was caught just a smidge more. The question that presented itself was what were the judges going to reward? It was a game of accuracy versus activity and in a close fight like this, the judges rewarded activity. I congratulate Showtime Shawn Porter, seemingly a really good guy, which may have also played a role in the decision, on his win and his endeavor to obtaining a World Championship. Who said nice guys finish last.

It goes down in the record books and every time future generations look back at world champions in probably the most talented division in boxing history, right there with the middleweights, with the likes of the greatest of all time, not Mayweather, Robinson, though Mayweather might be second on that list, Shawn Porter was one of them and I personally believe he deserves that honor.

The one knock and maybe the reason why Garcia might have given the fight away is because he looks for the one hitter quitters. With someone like Porter, who has an excellent chin but was hurt, Garcia needed to press that advantage. Instead of looking for the opening, Garcia needed to create that opening when Porter was hurt. Porter would have turtled up but Garcia needed to break through the shell and land some good hard shots to get the knockdown. Porter followed up quickly every time he felt that he hurt Garcia even though Garcia had good defense. That might have been the difference.

I had the fight 114-114 but was overruled because my opinion doesn’t matter.

IF ABORTIONS SHOULD BECOME ILLEGAL THEN SO SHOULD ORPHANAGES

orphanage

There is a lot being made of abortion rights and Roe v Wade with the The Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh being grilled in the Senate to see if he meets the standard that we expect from our highest Jurist Prudence officers. The fact that we are still worried about abortion rights is a little troublesome. Having two cases that set precedents in that area, we would think that the matter is decided. It seems that there are still people that think that a man can tell a woman what to do with her body or even another woman can tell a woman what to do with her body. However we feel about abortion, we should first realize that these people are individuals and can do whatever they want to their body as long as it does not hurt another living person. The question that then rises is when do we become living people? Is it on conception or when we can freely breathe on our own outside that mother’s body, it will never be the father’s body and even if science ever thought of a way to make that happen, I ain’t doing it, see Twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

To play devil’s advocate, lets say that abortion rights were overturned. How then can you not illegalize orphanages? Some people that choose abortion, choose it because they are not financially equipped to take care of a child, among other reasons. If that person is not, for whatever reason, able to take care of that child, then the State steps in and takes custody of that child. They then try and place that child in an institution until they can FIND a suitable home. Well, I think that they should be able to force a family to take that child, that’s right, I said it, forced to take that child. Not just any family but billionaires, millionaires, senators, congressman, judges anyone that can give that child a good home and upbringing. How would the law not interpret that as a reasonable solution if you force a woman to have a child who wanted to opt for an abortion? If you can force a person to have a child than you can force a suitable family to take care of a child that is in an orphanage or a State institution under the same reasoning that you outlawed abortions in the first place. That’s a laymen’s opinion and to be taken any way you want. Taking away choice is a dangerous game, they start with minuscule choices and work their way up to who you can marry and who you can’t and then proceed from their. Democracy is synonymous with freedom that is synonymous with choice. Once you allow the erosion of choices you allow the erosion of democracy.

My views on abortion don’t matter because I’m a man and I can’t have a child but if your argument is that the Constitution affords you the right to life, my argument is that it also affords you the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Being locked in an institution is not liberty nor do the chances of happiness increase when you are put in a place where affection is limited to a math equation, time allowed with minor divided by amount of minors taking age of minor into relevance. It seems that the constitution would best be served by forcing a capable family to add one child then forcing an institution to have 50 children.

Law Degree = Crayola + opinion + me ;).
